Rushpool Hall in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorks, a Victorian Spa resort, was constructed in 1863-4 from main seam ironstone taken from the Skelton Shaft mine, originally built as a Capital Messuage or Mansion House for John Bell, pioneer Ironmaster of Bell Brothers company, complete with stables, coach house and all other necessary offices, outbuildings and appurtenances. Rushpool Hall was described by Victorians as being "one of the most picturesque Country Mansions in North Yorkshire." The architecture of Rushpool Hall is attributed to Cuthbert Brodrick (1821-1905) famed Victorian architect of Leeds Town Hall (1852-8), the Leeds Corn Exchange (1860-2) and Leeds Mechanics Institute (1860-5), now the Leeds City Museum. In Leeds Brodrick was commonly referred to as “Town Hall Brodrick” for reasons obvious. He retired from the architectural profession in 1870 at the relatively young age of 49 and went to live at Le Vesinet on the outskirts of Paris, spending his time painting. In about 1898 he went to live with his niece in Jersey where he died on 2nd March 1905 at the ripe old age of 84 and is buried in St. Martins Churchyard. Cuthbert Brodrick was the subject of a 2007 BBC2 television programme…”The Case of the Disappearing Architect” by Jonathan Meades. Someone once remarked, ”London has Christopher Wren, Barcelona Antonio Gaudi and Leeds, well Leeds has Cuthbert Brodrick.” Rushpool Hall has for some years operated as a Weddings & Private Functions Venue.
