Willows High School in Education Agencies and Authorities

Willows Avenue, Cardiff, CF24 2YE

029 20414243

Willows High School serves the areas of Splott, Adamsdown and Tremorfa in the east of Cardiff. We are proud to have served this community since 1967. Our school motto is 'Belong, Believe, Achieve' and that is what we aim to achieve. We recognise that everyone in our community has the potential to achieve and our role is to ensure that all learners achieve as highly as they possibly can. Please feel free to have a look around our website, new things are being added all the time and we would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Willows High School is situated in the South east of Cardiff and serves the areas of Splott, Tremorfa and Adamsdown. We currently have approximately 750 pupils on roll and cover the 11 – 16 age range. We are proud to be part of a strong local community where we work closely with our local primary schools to ensure that all pupils are given the opportunity to succeed during their time in education. We are particularly proud of our Learning Centre which many local children have benefited from in the last 17 years. Approximately 50 pupils attend homework club on Mondays and Thursdays. 2010 saw us achieve our best GCSE results ever with 34% of pupils achieving 5 A* - C grades or their equivalent. Pupils at Willows have a choice of over 40 courses to choose from when they enter Year 10. We place great emphasis on the care and wellbeing of all pupils. All pupils have a Form Tutor and Progress Manager who follow them through their 5 years in the school. We work in an area of high population change and significant challenge. 44% of our pupils qualify for Free School Meals. One of our main challenges is helping pupils to overcome some of the barriers to learning they experience outside school. An increasing number of our pupils choose to remain in education when they leave us and we have excellent links with Coleg Glan Hafren, St. David’s Catholic 6th Form College and Cardiff High School in providing post 16 placements for our pupils. Our motto is ‘Belong, Believe, Achieve’ and we seek to make sure that all members of our community parents, staff and pupils, are ready to take up the challenge of becoming a lifelong learner

Fitzalan High School in Schools (Local Authority)

Lawrenny Avenue, Cardiff, Cardiff, CF11 8XB

029 20232850

Fitzalan is a thriving 11 to 18 community focused school, which has seen significant changes in investment over the last couple of years. We make no apologies for demanding high standards and high expectations knowing that this will enable all our learners to succeed and benefit from the many opportunities we offer. We aim to ensure that each student feels happy and challenged. Each individual needs to feel safe whilst respecting others. It is only then that students will become more effective learners. We want to challenge all, irrespective of ability levels, to achieve their best. Learning through partnership is key where learners engage with others through challenge and support. Fitzalan is trailblazing new ideas and methods to raise the achievement of all its learners, including our more able pupils, through many initiatives focusing on teaching and learning, such as the comprehensive use of ICT. At the same time we are, as part of our vision for the school, looking to further reach out and serve the needs of our community from morning to night. Our ability to do so is enhanced by outstanding facilities all recently opened such as, the eight pitch Gol five–a-side football centre (January 2006), sports hall (October 2006), refurbished swimming pool (June 2007), multi-media centre, performing arts centre and manufacturing and fabrication centre (all three September 2007). In May 2008 we recently opened our new hospitality and catering centre, expanded the Gol Centre from eight to twelve pitches and installed a climbing wall in the sports hall. During the past year cladding and windows on Upper School and Middle School have been renewed and investment in the school is ongoing

Celt Language School in Schools (Local Authority)

Salisbury Road, Cardiff, CF24 4AD

029 2033 9290

CELT - Centre for English Language Teaching was founded in 1989 and has been accredited by The British Council since 1993. Our school is the longest established independent institution offering English language courses in Cardiff, and is licensed as a Tier 4 Highly Trusted Sponsor (HTS) for students by the UK Border Agency. It is our aim to offer top quality language programmes at affordable prices and provide our students with personal care and attention in a homely and friendly learning environment. The owners, Greg Nelson and Grace Durighello, are both qualified EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers with several years' experience and are personally involved in the day-to-day running of the school at every level. We offer a range of English language courses throughout the year and although the school has grown quite a lot since we started, we are still essentially a small school. To offer first class teaching at affordable prices, to offer students advice and assistance regarding their studies within a caring and supportive environment, to help students enjoy their experience in Cardiff. We consider it very important that a student is made to feel 'at home' while attending a course at CELT. Our accommodation and welfare officer carefully chooses homestay providers for both our adult and teenage students and does everything possible to make sure that students are comfortable and enjoy their stay with us. Many of our families have been hosting for several years, and are experienced in helping students from different countries and cultures feel at home. Living with the family and taking part in their daily life provides students with the opportunity to constantly practise their new English language skills and learn more about British culture

Mary Immaculate High School in Schools (Local Authority)

Caerau Lane, Cardiff, CF5 5QZ

029 20593465

We are a co-educational comprehensive school meeting the needs of children of all abilities aged 11-16. We serve the Catholic community of the western region of Cardiff, as well as families from other religious and non-religious backgrounds who seek to receive a faith education. Our aim is quite simple. We want our children to develop into ‘well-rounded individuals’ who leave us ready to be successful in the next stage of their lives. We are a school which seeks to develop the ‘whole person’. This is not code for ‘non-academic’. In fact our school is the fastest improving school in Cardiff and one of the most improved in Wales! But a school which focuses purely on passing exams is ‘selling its children short!’ We aim to ensure every child in our care achieves their full potential academically but also develops skills to be successful in our ever-changing world and understand a sense of morality guided by the gospel values of respect, care, compassion and love. These aims are delivered through a strong pastoral system, a commitment to providing high quality teaching and learning and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and extra-curricular activities. Visitors to the school are impressed by the students, who are friendly, who value the school and want to be successful learners. The staff are dedicated and committed to providing the children with a first-class education. We only recruit the finest teachers who will inspire, motivate and challenge our students to be the ‘best they can be’. Children have one chance in education. They deserve the best and our role at school is to ensure we provide them with this. We have the highest expectations of and for our students and we shall leave no stone unturned to achieve our goal. We will always focus on improving the quality of the education our young people experience and place great importance in working together in partnership with students, staff and parents. Educating children is a great responsibility and an immense privilege. If you are a parent of a student already at the school, thank you for entrusting us with that job. We won’t let you down! If you are considering sending your child to Mary Immaculate or would like to find out more do get in touch. We are open to visitors every day
