Civil Service Benevolent Fund
The reasons for starting the Civil Service Benevolent Fund were clear from the outset, and the product of the times in which it was created. The death of a Civil Servant in the Victorian age almost inevitably meant hardship for their widow and hunger for any children. In 1884 the outlines for the Fund were drawn up and its first draft rules. At the time the Fund provided relief for necessitous widows by grants and annuities and also education of orphans, of serving and retired civil servants. They also enshrined the principle that all applications for assistance would be confidential. The Fund immediately made a difference to the lives of widows and orphans who previously could only expect a few shillings from spontaneous collections held among the deceased Civil Servant's colleagues.

The lock of the inside door was no longer working. Locksmiths Sutton immediatly saw what was required and ordered the piece needing replacement. However, on his way out he noticed that the main entrance door was difficult to close and lock. He kindly offered to have a look and in no time solved the problem which had been nagging for months. I was very impressed by Locksmiths Sutton expertise and how clear his explanations were. I would not hesitate to recommend them.
