Medical Foundation For the Care of Victims of Torture in (Charities)

111 Isledon Road, London, N7 7JW

The work of Freedom from Torture began more than 25 years ago growing out of Amnesty International’s Medical Group. Volunteer health professionals (including some of the most senior specialists in the medical profession) campaigned against violations of human rights and documented evidence of torture. Operating at first from a hut in the yard of the Amnesty International office, the six founding members of Freedom from Torture - then the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture – under Helen Bamber’s directorship began documenting evidence of torture through provision of consultation for survivors and campaigning against human rights violations. The new organisation was granted charitable status on Christmas Eve 1985 and set out to provide survivors with medical treatment, counselling and therapy and to document evidence of torture.

    Time Bank

We are passionate about volunteering and believe that good quality volunteering can make a positive impact on our society. TimeBank is a national volunteering charity. We run our own volunteering projects which are designed to tackle social issues. They focus on mentoring and youth-led volunteering tackling big issues head on. From social exclusion to digital inclusion, we show the difference volunteers can make and use this to influence others – policy makers, charities and businesses. Knowing that great volunteering doesn’t just happen on its own, we’re also here to offer support and advice to everyone who wants to volunteer. At TimeBank we live and breathe volunteering. TimeBank staff volunteer and all our Trustees are also volunteers.

    Family Action

140 years old in 2009! Family Action celebrated its 140th birthday in 2009. Family Action has a long and proud history of supporting families in the UK. Since its establishment Family Action has provided support to the neediest families, whatever their situation, helping them move towards a brighter future. Volunteers have played a key role in Family Action throughout the years. Indeed, the organisation was almost entirely volunteer-run for many years, though during that time we were also making a vital contribution to the professionalisation of social work. Find out more about the history of volunteering and the role that volunteers played in the organisation. Read about Family Action in the 1800s, 1900s and Today. This year Family Action was proud to be part of the Mayor of London’s Story of London festival. Find out more about our Story 140 project. And you can read more stories from the families we have worked with over the years in our case studies.
