Quite large cheap Indian cafe that stays open very late. Food is all prepared in advance and heated up on demand - Quite good in spite of that however,

My family and I have eaten at the Jalalabad ever since we moved to the area and have had many good meals there. Recently though I have been quite disappointed with the food. I have also noticed lots of very uncomplimentary comments about this restaurant on several review sites. So it cannot just be me ! My only conclusion is that the long standing chef must have left and they are struggling to find a good replacement. I am going to wait a few months before going again and will post another review then with my findings (Jan 2010).

I told some English friends from work that I live in Barking and they immediately asked me if I had tried this local take away - I said that I hadn't but promised I would give it a go as they had recommended it. I found their website and menu on line at http://www.farhanatakeaway.co.uk and rang through with my order.
We began with the Farhana special mixed starter consisting of both chicken and lamb tikka, shamee kebab and some onion bhajis. We had not ordered papadoms but they arrived as well (free of charge) along with a couple of slices of lemon, fresh onion and cucumber salad and some mint sauce. My wife and daughter particularly liked the shamee kebab. The portion size was very generous and we all wondered how they managed to do it for just £3.70.
We followed with chicken pathia (£5.75), lamb bhuna (£4.35) and king prawn jalfrezi (£6.50) and shared them between the 3 of us. We had also ordered 2 portions of pillau rice (£1.70 each) to share. The other 2 dishes were good but the king prawn jalfrezi was excellent. It was fairly hot with lots of sliced green chilli, capsicum, tomatoes and onions.
We placed our order at 7.30pm and it arrived piping hot at our house about a mile away shortly after 8.00pm.
My only criticism, if it is a criticism, is that there was far more food than we expected. I am really glad I did not order any nan bread or vegetable dishes. We were barely able to finish what we had.
