The Charitable Trust's sole activity is to manage and operate the Middlemore Family Centre in Bartley Green, Birmingham. This provides children and families in crisis with practical, emotional and social support in a community setting in order to develop positive family relationships and to improve the life prospects of children. All clients are referred to the Centre by Social Services or by the Health and Education agencies. The initial assessments tend to identify problems which have been brought about by a variety of factors that include stress, anxiety, depression, domestic violence, sexual abuse, debt and housing issues, drug and alcohol abuse, and/or an inability to form sound relationships, both in and outside the family. Many of the children referred have behavioural problems, sometimes caused by living with extreme difficulties in the home. The Middlemore approach, which may include development and behavioural work with children, and/or the provision of counselling for adults

The Sir John Middlemore Charitable Trust was established in 1872 to improve the life chances of children, who through no fault of their own, found themselves in the midst of desperate and deteriorating family relationships
