The charity was founded in 1843 by William Willams, a solicitor's clerk, who wanted to use education to break the cycle of deprivation and poverty among street children in London. Shaftesbury Young People (formerly known as Shaftesbury Homes & Arethusa) has retained ‘Shaftesbury’ in the name in memory of our great patron, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. Over the past three centuries, the charity has provided a home and education for thousands of homeless boys and girls. Shaftesbury Young People is absolutely committed to improving the experiences and outcomes of looked after young people, care leavers and young people in need.
