Combining a conventional pub with a continental-style bistro might seem a little adventurous; however, 1901 achieves this with ease. Situated a short distance from Shawlands Cross, this French-owned bar and bistro provides a friendly and unassuming dining experience. An assortment of paintings (which are available to buy) are on display and low lighting accentuated with candlelight creates a cosy atmosphere. Whilst vegetarian options are limited, fish dishes boast a noticeable presence in the menu. Roast salmon with sun-dried tomato and black olive butter is a well-presented and sizeable fillet served with crispy roast potatoes and lightly seasoned vegetables. Pasta dishes are also heavily prominent and are available in two sizes. The lasagne blends tender beef bolognese with an slightly overwhelming flavour of mature cheese. Starters include a choice of two blended soups daily with an abundance of bread. Dessert options include deep-filled apple strudel served piping hot with a sauce that is a blend of custard and cream. A treacle flavour overwhelms the sticky toffee pudding but this is neutralised somewhat by the ice-cream. The lunch and pre-Theatre menus offer similar choice and are represent a good bargain.
